P4 Rapid is a simple in-milk test that represents the easiest way for dairy herd owners, managers, and veterinary technicians to quickly and accurately identify the fertility status of any healthy cow—in only 5 minutes. P4 Rapid’s simple visual results eliminate the guesswork of insemination, bringing cows back into production much faster than other methods.
Immediate identification of fertility status to properly time the use of Artificial Insemination (AI) has long been a goal of herd owners around the world. U.S. AI pregnancy success rates average only around 30% due to the lower effectiveness of current estrus identification methods. P4 Rapid’s intuitive cow-side, lateral flow design requires no special skills or training to use and delivers accurate, near instant results through a simple visual reaction. P4 Rapid represents a significant milestone and a dramatic paradigm shift from the slow and expensive testing used in today’s dairy breeding community.
Biomed Diagnostics and Ridgeway Science, part of Ridgeway Research Ltd, have teamed up to transform the bovine dairy market with P4 Rapid. Biomed Diagnostics is the pioneer of InPouch™ and InTray™ diagnostic testing and has set the gold standard for bovine trichomoniasis assessment. Ridgeway Science works closely with the veterinary, agriculture, and research sectors around the world—leading the way in developing exciting new products and services as part of its commitment to farming, animal health, and scientific excellence.
“Biomed’s commitment to innovative, user-friendly test design has made its tests the go-to for many in the beef industry. Together, our collective technologies will save time and money for cattle farmers, especially in the dairy community, helping them achieve greater profits through optimized milk production,” - Maggie Fisher, Managing Director of Ridgeway
A regular cow cycle is 21 days, but can vary, cow to cow, from 17 to 24 days. This variance adds uncertainty and expands the chance of missing opportunities to inseminate or inseminating at the wrong time.
The fertility cycle also involves different hormones that can cause fertility-type activity and fool even the most experienced observer, resulting in AI misses and mis-timing.
To truly KNOW a cow’s fertility status, there is only one method that is virtually foolproof: measuring progesterone in either blood or milk. The fastest and most accurate way to measure progesterone is in its milk. P4 Rapid does just that, showing if the cow is cycling, where the animal is in its cycle, and if it is time for Artificial Insemination (AI).
External signs a cow is cycling include standing heat and bulling. But standing heat is only visible for short periods throughout the day, and some cows stand to be mounted when they’re not in heat.
False bulling is also common. Many perfectly healthy and fertile cows go through their entire cycle without displaying any outward signs of estrus at all. Because external signs can be unreliable, therefore making activity monitors unreliable, tracking progesterone is the most reliable way to confirm heat and improve the fertility of the herd.
“P4 Rapid is very useful in picking up cows returning to service without obvious signs of oestrus.”
When farmers AI at the right time, they minimize the number of hormonal injections they need to give. This reduces contamination in the milk, helps them maintain optimum milk production (as the stress of injections can impair milk yield), and saves money. P4 Rapid also saves on wasted straws, excessive technician fees, and unnecessary culling.
Used on its own, P4 Rapid provides clear and accurate information to help manage the fertility of the herd. It works just as well alongside other heat detection devices because not all cows follow normal behavior. Some don’t exhibit any signs to trigger heat monitors. And these monitors can easily be activated by something as small as a cow running from a dog.
The information farmers get from heat monitors is not always accurate, but, with the P4 Rapid in-milk test, they can be sure.
Many factors are being blamed for a reduction of herd fertility and American dairy farmers are frustrated. P4 Rapid will help you reverse this trend.
The quick and easy heat test will help farmers increase their herd fertility and productivity by saving them money on wasted straws and unnecessary culls.
P4 Rapid helps improve overall herd quality by preventing early calving, abortions, and infections. It also helps vets diagnose unreliable and potentially cystic cows.
